During their reign Iran saw all seasons, including modernisation, dictatorship, arbitrary despotism, chaos, foreign invasion and revolution. It was also a period in which the Pahlavis’ nationalist ideology clashed with democratic ideals, communist aspirations and – ultimately – Islamist ideology.
